For some years the European Union ruling bureaucracy has been set on a course leading to political and financial integration of member states including Europe's oldest and most culturally different nations. Such a policy was doomed to fail, but even now with EU bureaucratic dictatorship and contempt for national sovereignty, democracy and basic human rights such as free speech having triggered a resurgence of European nationalism, the Gauleiters are determined to bend member nations to their will. Greece draws up drachma plans, prepares to miss IMF payment

Greece is preparing plans to nationalise the country’s banking system and introduce a parallel coupon currency so that citizens can carry on their day to day activities in the event of the Eurozone taking steps to defuse the simmering debt crisis.

Sources in the governing Syriza party said the government is determined to maintain public services and pay pensions if funds run critically low. It may be forced to take the unprecedented and high risk step of missing a payment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as early as next week (5 - 12 April, 2015).

Greece no longer has sufficient reserves to pay the IMF €458m interest due on Greek bonds on April 9 and also to cover payments for salaries and social security on April 14, unless the eurozone agrees to release further bail-out funds in time.

“We are a Left-wing government. If we have to choose between a default to the IMF or a default to our own people, it is a no-brainer,” said a Syriza official.

Syriza’s radical socialist government would rather keep its dispute to EU Eurozone creditors but IMF payments are due before the next payments to the ECB and European Central Banks. While Syriza is aware that the consequences of a formal IMF default will not be pleasant, it increasingly views a slide into pre-default arrears as a necessary escalation in its showdown with Brussels and Frankfurt.

If Greece misses the payment to the IMF on 9-Apr, this would not necessarily trigger an immediate default. Greece may have an implicit grace period of one month. 1 The sequence of events would be as follows: 1) IMF Staff immediately sends a cable urging the member to make the payment promptly; this communication is followed up through the office of the concerned Executive Director. The member is not permitted any use of the Fund’s resources, nor is any request for the use of Fund resources placed before the Executive Board until the arrears are cleared; 2) After 2 weeks, management sends a communication to the Governor for the member, stressing the seriousness of the failure to meet obligations and urging full and prompt settlement, and 3) After 1 month, the Managing Director notifies the Executive Board that an obligation is overdue.

It is once the Executive Board has been notified of the missed payment that a critical sequence of events could unfold. According to the master financial assistance facility agreement between the EFSF and Greece, the notification of an overdue payment to the IMF would constitute an event of default for the EFSF loans. Such a scenario would risk the EFSF cancelling all or part of its facility, or even declaring the principal amount of the loan to be due immediately. In turn, the acceleration of EFSF loans linked to the PSI exchange would trigger a default event for the PSI GGBs. Even if Greece repays the IMF loan of €458mln on April 9, note that they also have to repay €200mln on May 1 and €763mln on May 12.

The view in Athens is that the EU finance managers have yet to grasp that the political landscape has changed dramatically since the election of Syriza in January and that they will have to make real concessions if they wish to prevent a disastrous crisis of the monetary union, an outcome they have ruled out repeatedly as unthinkable.

“They want to put us through the ritual of humiliation and force us into sequestration. They are trying to put us in a position where we either have to default to our own people or sign up to a deal that is politically toxic for us. If that is their objective, they will have to do it without us,” the source said.

Going into arrears with the IMF is extremely risky. No developed country has ever defaulted to the Bretton Woods institutions. While there would be a six weeks 'cooling off' period before the IMF board declared Greece to be in technical default, the process could spin out of control at various stages.

Syriza sources say are they fully aware that a tough line with creditors risks setting off an unstoppable chain-reaction. They insist that they are willing to contemplate the worst rather than abandon their electoral pledges to the Greek people. An emergency fall-back plan is already in the works.

With just a day left before a key vote in the German Bundestag on ratifying the 4-month Greek bailout extension, the biggest-selling, mass-market newspaper of the EU's most powerful economy, with a circulation of 2.5 million, Bild, has let the Ruling Bureaucrats of Brussels feels about the latest financial acrobatics aimed at preventing poo old Greece from escaping the slavery imposed on it by membership of the Euro.

The one - word banner headline hardly needs translation but just to be sure the Euro Rat Bureaucrats get the message, the sub heading printed below "Nein", translates as "No more billions for greedy Greeks."

As part of a campaign to persuade the budestag to thake the first step towards a trial separation from the perpetually penniless Club Mediterranean nations, Bild is encouraging its readers to take selfies holding the page up and send them in for publication. Selfies of readers brandishing the “Nein!” had already begun flooding in on Thursday morning, with many holding it up in their offices or outside their homes.

The endless Greek bailouts have become a very sensitive one for Germany, with public opinion polarized whether Greece should be the receipient of what Germany sees as endless taxpayer funding, at least one entity has so far voiced support for Merkel and the dream of a single European nation. The German Association of Journalists called on the "Boulevard media" to stop the 'campaigneering', arguing that Bild has crossed the line into political campaign by urging readers to pose with their “Nein” poster ahead of tomorrow’s Bundestag vote. The DJV added (in a translation published in The Guardian,) that "it is ethically questionable to vilify a whole nation for the fiscal mistakes of their politicians."

Will it make a difference? For now the Bild campaign seems to be achieving its intended goal in the process once again making a mockery of the European "Union"

Greece Suffers Biggest Bank Run In History: January Deposits Plunge To 2005 Levels

As Germany's Bundestag voted to ratify the extension to the Greek bailout, one of the biggest question marks surrounding the Greek negotiation and ultimately, bailout extension, was just how panicked was the Greek population and domestic corporations. Recall that as explained previously, the tension boiled down to this: the Troika did everything in its power to accelerate the bank run in order to crush any negotiating leverage Varoufakis may have; Greece on the other hand was desperate to make its cash drain appear far better than rumored.

Moments ago the Bank of Greece presented its latest, January, deposit data. And it's a doozy: following a record €12.2 billion monthly outflow, greater in absolute and relative terms than anything experienced during any of the previous Greek crises and bailouts, the total amount of Greek corporate and household deposits has now tumbled to just €148 billion, down 7.7% from the month before, and down 10% since November. This number is in line with some of the more pessimistic expectations, and brings the total cash holdings at Greek banks to the lowest level since August 2005.

‘Greek revolution spreads 'like wildfire’ across Europe

The poularity of Anti - EU political movements has surged all around Europe in the wake of the Syriza victory in the recent Greek general election. It seems that prior to the European Parliament election las may most European voters had been resigned to their political elites dragging them closer to a ferderal European single state, with the progressive loss of civil liberties, cultural homogenization and losst of national sovereignty and identity that would entail.

The success of UKIP in Britain, the Front National in France and Five Star in Italy and the Danish peoples' party along with the emergence of parties like Spain's Podimos, the AFD in Germany and the Sweden Democrats spells out the message very clearly, the people are sick of the lying, self serving elites who advocate uncontrolled immigration so they can hire cheap labour for their factories, who favour free trade so the products of low labour cost nations of Eastern Europe can be used to sqeeze the profits of small businesses and so that the European working classes, whom the elite fear and despise, can be overwhelmed.

The plan looks set to fail thanks to the courage of Greece in standing up to the EU / US bully boys.

It's the political not financial consequences of a Greek exit from the EU that scare the elite.

Pro-government protesters in Athens’ Syntagma Square ahead of the eurozone finance ministers' meeting in Brussels demanded that no more concessions are made, noted Aris Chatzistefanou, a journalist and filmmaker.

“The same message that PM Mr. Tsipras had Friday night when there was an emergency Cabinet meeting with many left-wing ministers saying that we have already made enough concessions in these negotiations and we should keep to our positions otherwise it will be seen as a total betrayal of what we said to the electorate before the election. When they talk about concessions, it’s mainly three things: that they don’t talk any more about cancelling the debt which was one of the promises that this party made to the electorate. The second is they have agreed to accept 70 percent of the memorandum that is the austerity package imposed in Greece by the IMF and ECB and the European Commission. And the third is that we should have a primary surplus. That practically means a kind of continuation of austerity…”

“…This year only we have to repay something around €22 billion and almost €6-7 billion of this amount is the interest that we have to repay. So by making at least a memorandum in repaying the debt there is enough money to keep the economy staying alive for a few more months until the solution is found.Don’t forget that the same policy was applied even in Russia, in Argentina, Iceland, Ecuador and there was always a positive outcome for the economy. On the other hand, don’t forget that apart from the Western financial centers that are threatening Greece with stopping the liquidity of the banking sector there are some other financial centers that can be trusted,” Chatzistefanou said.

The main concern for Berlin now, he observed, is the political consequences of the Greek bailout talks in Brussels.

“There might be a domino effect if people in other European countries realize that this austerity imposed by Brussels and Berlin is not the only way out of the crisis… I think this is a big problem for Berlin at the moment. They are not afraid of the financial consequences. Don’t forget that Greece is a very small economy, 2 percent of the eurozone. They are afraid of the political consequences,” Chatzistefanou told RT.

The Centre - Left, Federalist Consensus Collapses Across Europe

The centre left, federalist, oligarchical collectivist political consensus that had dominated European Union politics for thirty years is disintegrating. UKIP in the UK, Front National in France, Italy's Five Star movement and Liga Nord, Syriza in Greece and the Swedeb Democrats have set in train a grassroots rebellion against bureaucratic dictatorship from Brussels. Establishment parties of centre-left and centre-right – La Casta, as they say in Spain – have successively immolated themselves by imposing laws and policies forulated in Brussels against the interests of their own citizens.

Spain’s Bolivarian Podemos party, a recent start up, is currently topping the polls and with only moths to go to an election the popularity shows no sign of fading. Podemos has endured crippling internal rifts. It has shrugged off hostile press coverage over financial ties to Venezuela. Nothing sticks, simply because Podemos is anti establishment and the parties of the polical establishment and the political, business and bureaucratiuc establishment are recognized as irredeemably corrupt and rotten to the core.

The insurrectionists who came from nowhere last year, with Trotskyist roots and more radically left wing views than those of Syriza in Greece, are pulling further ahead in the polls. The latest Metroscopia survey gave Podemos 28pc. The ruling conservatives have dropped to 21pc.

The once-great PSOE - Spanish Workers Socialist Party - has fallen to 18pc and risks fading away like the Dutch Labour Party, or the French Socialists, or Greece's Pasok. A pro Euro, pro - brussels stance is toxic in european politics right now.

As matters stand, Podemos would win the Spanish elections in November with a campaign calling for the cancellation of "unjust debt", a reversal of labour reforms, public control over energy, the banks, and the commanding heights of the economy, and withdrawal from Nato.

Europe's policy elites can rail angrily at the folly of these plans if they wish, but they must answer why ex-Trotskyists with a plan to dismantle market capitalism are taking a major EMU state by storm. It is what happens 5.46m people lack jobs, when 2m households still have no earned income, when youth unemployment is still running at 51.4pc and rising, and home prices are down 42pc, and the economy six years into a depression and with only fraudulent statistics to defend its policies.

It is pointless protesting that Spain's economy is turning the corner, a contested claim in any case. There comes a point when a social order breaks and the population stops believing anything its leaders say.

The EU elites themselves have run their currency experiment into the ground by imposing synchronized monetary, fiscal, and banking contraction on the southern half of EMU, in defiance of known economic science and the lessons of the 1930s. It is they who pushed the eurozone into deflation, and thereby pushed the debtor states further into compound-interest traps.

It is they who deployed the EMU policy machinery to uphold the interests of creditors, refusing to acknowledge that the root cause of Europe's crisis was a flood excess capital flows into vulnerable economies. It is they who prevented a US-style recovery from the financial crisis, and they should not be surprised that such historic errors are coming back to haunt.

The revolts in Italy and France are more right wing but just as dangerous for Brussels. Italians may not wish to leave the Euro but political consent for rule from Brussels has broken down. All three opposition parties are now anti-euro in one way or another. Beppe Grillo's Five Star movement - with 108 seats in parliament - is openly calling for a return to the lira.

Mr Grillo proclaims that Syriza is carrying the torch for all the long-suffering peoples of southern Europe, as it is in a sense.

"What’s happening to Greece today, will be happening to Italy tomorrow. Sooner or later, default is coming," he said.

Yesterday’s news reports did the usual whitewash job in reporting the the Minsk Summit which aimed to thrash out a Ukraine “peace” deal. Talks have desended into a pantomie however; as mainstream media gives the impression that the US / EU / NATO alliance are solid in their defence of the illigral neo - Nazi government imposed on Ukraine following the CIA engineered coup last year, in reality the various parties involved appear to be flying apart faster than the fragments of shell casing from missiles exploding at they strike targets on Donetsk.

The headlines are not just contradicting each other but themselves too as they try to keep up with changing positions. Most significantly perhaps: Despite John Kerry’s denial of any split between Germany and US over arms deliveries to Ukraine, German Foreign Minister Steinmeier slammed Washington’s strategy for arming the Ukraine government with high tech weapons as being “not just risky but counterproductive.”

No surprise there, WTF are the Americans thinking of. The Kiev thugs have waged a genocideal war on Russian separatists and are losing despite vastly outnumbering Ukraine's ethnic Russian population and having a professional (sort of) army as against the rebels irregular militias.

In terms of geopolitical strategy however, France’s continued slide towards Russia following Francois Hollande’s calls for greater autonomy for Eastern Ukraine, will perhaps in the long term prove the best indicator of the direction global politics are heading towards. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who hopes to regain the Presidency in 2017, has come out in apparent support of Russia and more importantly against the USA. He said, “We are part of a common civilization with Russia,” adding, “the interests of the Americans with the Russians are not the interests of Europe and Russia.”

Even NATO appears to have given up hope of peace as Stoltenberg’s statements show little optimism and the decision by Cyprus to allow Russia to use its soil for military facilities suggests all is not at all well in the European ‘union’.’

Another eastern Mediterranean regional power, Turkey, has also been building bridges with Russia recently. The government in Ankara signed bilateral trade agreements with Russia, China and Iran, thus joining the move to dump the petrtodollar which is being led by Russia and China. Brazil and India are also involved in the move.

Britain and EU Think About 'Divorce’: Juncker

European Commission President Jean-Claude ~~Drunkard~~ Juncker, the EU Official rumoured to have brandy for breakfast, has stuck a spike in the wheels of David Cameron’s bid to renegotiate the terms of Britain’s EU membership to restrict imigratiuon into Britain. The former Luxembourg Prime Minister said Britain’s membership of the political bloc is a doomed romance and suggested that now might be the time to get a divorce, according to the Telegraph (Read more).

The standard response from the European Commission, which is the ‘government’ of the EU, and fro EU national leaders including Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande, is that free movement of people within the EU is non negotiable. The concern of UK politicians is that once through the notoriously insecure borders of Italy, Greece and former Soviet republics in eastern Europe there is nothing to stop illegal immigrants, including terrorists, religious extremists and criminal elements from headinf for Britain.

It is not yet possible for non Europeans to enter Britain from within the EU but the sheer numbers from Asia, African and Eastern Europe reaching the west of mainland Europe and trying to cross the Channel is overwhelming our border security forces. The situation is not helped by the ruman rights screechers insisting all undocumented arrivals be treated as refugees or political asylum seekers and put into a process which takes months, years in some cases, and costs vast amounts before they are either accepted or deported.

Then of course we have the problem of the bleeding hearts of Labour and the Liberal Democrats who would smply grant citizenship rights to anyone who turns up at our doors and enrol them in the welfare and national health systems without question. Our problem is as much with our hypocritical, self interested, political left who are turly only seeking peer approval.

Trying to keep everyone happy as the General Election looms, Cameron has tried to sell the idea that the EU is willing to listen to his case. This is not so, the latest statements, given in a speech in Paris, show no shift at all from the EU's usual position, with Juncker saying “When one mentions the end of the free circulation of workers, there can be no debate, dialogue or compromise.”

In an obvious reference to the Prime Minister's campaign to secure real change from Brussels, he said, “we can fight against abuses but the EU won’t change the treaties to satisfy the whim of certain politicians. People shouldn’t stay together if the conditions aren’t the same as when things started. It’s easy to fall in love and more difficult to stay together.”

It is the first time Mr Juncker has openly said that Britain could leave the EU in public, and he made certain his words would not be confused by reiterating that he could not get down on his knees and beg Britain to stay.

“I am for the respect of member states, respect between the institutions and member states. I am against all forms of grovelling.”

The news comes as the General Election campaign has already started, with opinion polls showing a narrow lead in support for a British exit ahead of May.

The Greek Bail Out Deal Humiliates Greece Without Solving Anything

A "strictly confidential" 10-page debt sustainability report commissioned for yesterday's meeting of eurozone ministers has been leaked to the media. The document concludes that the austerity measures being foisted on Greece in order that the indebted country can receive a €130bn bailout, are quite likely to prove self-defeating, in that the austerity, by further weakening the economy are likely to cause the sovereign debt to GDP ratio to rise further.
As if that was not bad enough, the debt write off being demanded from private investors may prevent Greece from returning to private markets for its finance for many decades, making the country indefinitely reliant on support from the EU and IMF. After the bailouts so much of Greek's debt will be held by official repositories, all of who will have preferential treatment as creditors, that no private sector investor would consider lending, knowing that private creditors would be last in the queue of people wanting to be paid back.
The Daily Stirrer has been saying for two years this would be the outcome of the Greek debt crisis, it was obvious to everyone else too, but it is also obvious that the EU / IMF policy was never about helping Greece, which was railroaded into the single currency although it's economy was far too weak, to get back on its feet financially; the real agenda is to move forward towards a single European superstate which would be extended beyond Europe to include more economic basket case nations in north Africa and the Middle East.
Still the acknowledgement of these problems must be seen as progress among the grand delusions of eurozone policy-making.
We have to wonder why they bother trying to persuade us everything is hunky - dory and Federalisation of Europe is the future given the quite high probability of eventual failure they covertly assign to the bailout. Even if favourable scenario outlined in the sustainability report plays out, Greece is going to need a third bailout of €50bn by the end of the decade on top of the €136bn agreed in principle last night. This favourable scenario, by the way, makes the heroic assumption that the Greek economy will stop shrinking next year and return to 2.per cent growth in 2014. Few sane commentators believe that's remotely possible.
Under a "tailored downside scenario" (the leaked document's words), which by any stretch of the imagination looks pretty optimistic, debt would fall much more slowly than hoped for reaching only 160pc of GDP by the end of the decade, rather than the 120pc the eurozone requires of Greece. In such circumstances, €245bn of bailout money would be required. Given that Britain and Sweden and Denmark are outside the Euro single currency system and Britain's economy is wobbly anyway, That France and Austria have already had their credit rating downgraded because of exposure to Greek debt and The Netherlands, politically, is engaged in a charge to the Eurosceptic right this leaves only little Finland and microstate Luxembourg to support Germany in propping up Greece and the other failed economies, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Cyprus.
German taxpayers are already in revolt, local elections there are very volatile with winners from the right and left throwing out incumbents. The mood of the voters seems to be anything except the EU. It is unlikely taxpayers in the rest of the E.U. will be sympathetic to such a handout intolerable for the rest of the eurozone, there is a growing feeling that tax revenue should be kept at home, let the poor nations fend for themselves. If the rest of Europe is not happy to forego new hospitals, schools, roads and properly equipped defence forces, think what the austerity programme will mean for the Greeks. As part of the deal, the Greek government has committed to build into into its legal framework a provision to give priority to debt service payments above all other public expenditure, this clause is to be included in an amended Greek Constitution as soon as possible. This is the sort of thing that prompts revolutions.
The arrogant bureaucrats of Brussels, the IMF and the United Nations do not fear threats to people on the streets, they feel secure in their ivory towers.
Already, polls published by local Greek media indicate that the centre parties (National Democrats, and in particular the main party in the Greek assembly PASOK) are losing popular support hand over fist, so it matters not a jot that the two main coalition parties have signed up to full ongoing implementation after elections in April because they will no longer be running the show. In contrast, the parties further from the centre continue to gain popular support, and none of these have expressed support for the austerity programme so anything voted through now is likely to be repealed in a few months.
The measures, including constitutional change also have to be approved by a number of national parliaments elsewhere in the eurozone. It would too hasty to say this austerity programme cannot work, we have seen the Eurocrats deploy a combination of bullying and bribery to get their way before which is the only reason the eurozone has repeatedly defied the sceptics in holding together thus far. However it is certainly a programme that cannot succeed, and will only delay the day when Greece is forced out of the eurozone.

Why multiculturalism has failed Britain, France and every other country

No one need be reminded so soon of the Paris attacks that left 12 dead last week. And yet the lumps returned to our throats last night as we heard breaking news of terror raids in Verviers in Belgium. Another atrocity avoided, perhaps – but sadly a stark reminder that the enemies of freedom will not stop until we stop them, and tackle the causes at the root of these heinous crimes.

I gave a speech in the European Parliament this week which I hope you might watch.

It was, broadly, about the solidarity that we must show with the people of France – but also, I mentioned that the sort of posturing that is often done by political figures in perilous times is not enough — the people of respective European nations want action.

And they want action because we’ve seen and heard this all before, and yet we still contribute to the root causes of the problems, and fail to address issues in favour of, say, fighting costly wars abroad. I think it is time we broke the vicious cycle of war and terror, and end the Bush-Blair era for good. All well and good you might say: but how?

I won’t claim to have all the answers. But I have a few ideas which are backed up by the hard evidence.

Firstly: let’s stop getting involved in wars abroad for the sake of a pat on the back from “Mr President”, or as some sort of means by which Britain projects power abroad. We don’t need to do that. If we want to project strength – we need to get our national finances in order, and we need to start trading with the rest of the world, rather than just the European Union. Nothing would do this country more good than to become an economic powerhouse again, rather than borrowing and spending, a la Mr Brown and Mr Osborne.

Secondly: how about ending this silly idea that segregation and identity politics are sustainable? They’re not. The multiculturalism project has failed. The very foundations of it – mass migration, ghettoisation, and excuse-making for unseemly events – were always deeply shaky. But in the 90s and early 2000s we went through a political correctness experiment which has backfired on our countries.

Colleagues tell me during this time they were often asked if they were “Muslim” or “British”, as multiculturalism suggests. But why can’t people be considered British Muslims? Or British Hindus? Or British Jews? Most people actually identify locally, rather than nationally or by ethnicity or religion anyway. The multiculturalism backers simply don't allow for this.

They wilfully segregate us, and politicians play “divide and conquer” with our sensitivities.

Multiculturalism, I would argue, urges a “tick box approach” to identity politics.

Another idea, called interculturalism, actually claims that while identity may be fluid, Western societies should also reject illiberal practices introduced by other cultures. Ideas such as female genital mutilation, perhaps, or expecting women to segregate themselves from men.

Thirdly: We need to stand by British Muslims, or those across the continent who are outraged and horrified by the civil war raging inside Islam right now. We should have sympathy for these people – many of whom are just trying to get a day’s work done and put food on the tables for their families.

I’m not denying that I am also concerned by some of the polling responses on issues like Sharia law, and Quranic punishments such as death for leaving Islam. But maybe, just maybe, we’re seeing these kinds of responses from young British Muslims because we as a society and a civilisation have been so afraid of standing up for what we believe in, and expect people living here to believe in. Lastly: I am utterly disgusted by the political game playing by the establishment politicians over the Paris attacks.

Initially, when I brought up the nuances surrounding multiculturalism, they claimed I was politicising what was already, self-evidently, a political event. Then, the likes of Sir Roger Gale MP wrote in a local newspaper in Thanet, that he didn’t want to win re-election in May with the support of anyone who agrees with me over the issue.

Might I say: he may find re-election a tad difficult with that attitude.

Not only did Sir Roger politicise the issue himself by writing such bile in a newspaper in a seat he desperately wants to hold onto in May, but he also fundamentally misunderstood what I was saying. I didn’t say “Vote UKIP” when asked about the Paris attacks, whereas I know that the Tories actually did use the terrorist attacks to urge people to campaign for the party.

Instead, I simply challenged a philosophy in multiculturalism that has failed Britain, failed France, and in reality failed every country it has been implemented in.

“I fell out of love with the EU, and so should you,” Mehdi Hassan in the New Statesman in December 2014. Strange, because Medhi is a committed supporters of the Politically Correct Left. He may be open-minded, curious, interested in new ideas, but there can be no doubt about where he sits on the political spectrum. He supports global warming alarmism, destroying natural seed stock so that only corporate controlled GM food crops can be grown, he supports global totalitarian government for the very best of 'liberal' reasons, still thinks Barack Obama is wonderful in spite of all the wars and bloodshed, and in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary he believes that higher taxation and bigger government can close the wealth gap between rich and poor.

In short he is typical of that generation of journalists, broadcasters and social commentators who spent far too long in full time education and has ended up big on socialist dogma and hopelessly lacking any understanding of how human societies work.

Mehdi has been jolted him out of his arrested adolescent beliefs that government is our friend and that we should never question the academic orthodoxy, partly by the video of Eurosceptic Dan Hannan below, although his conversion owes a lot to the ongoing financial crisis on the the Euro zone and the crisis of democracy in the EU as the wannabe bureaucratic Dictatorship in Brussels tries to exert power over the governments of soveereign nations.

At some stage in the past few years many Leftist big power single European superstate enthusiasts, have undergone such an epiphany; at some point they noticed that instead of cheerting the side supporting more public spending, higher welfare benefits and the abolition of poverty they had somehow ended on the side the Eurocrats and Corporatists who preach austerity from private jets or six star hotels rather than standing with the millions being thrown out of work and plunged into poverty by the single currency and financial policies that benefit the corporate billionaires and the oligarchs.

The Left across Europe has been seduced by talk of equality and workers’ rights that you can’t be equal with a billionaire if you're living on benefits or enjoy those workers' rights if you are out of work.

Medhi, though he still talks a lot of bollocks, has gone out on a limb over EU Bureaucratic Dictatorship. Most British Leftists still tend to be on the side of Brussels, to them it represents globalism, free movement of people throughjout the world, privileged status for women and minorities in the name of equality and all those other sacred cows of the fanatically atheist left. It’s not that they refuse to criticise the EU; but their starting assumption is that European integration which means the abolition of national sovereignty and the destruction of national cultures in favour of an ersatz 'European' cultures systhesised by university professors is positive, and that opposition to the all-join-hand-and-sing-Kumbaya world view is small-minded and right wing.

In other words, they are not making a cost-benefit analysis but going with their religious beliefs. Which is, in fairness, what most of us do on most questions most of the time. It would, after all, be hugely time-consuming to work out every issue from logically from empirical evidence. We tend, instead, to glance at who has lined up on which side, and sidle towards our habitual allies – and away from our customary opponents.

Thus, in the 1970s, the British Right was pushed towards the support for EEC because Labour's leading lefties, Tony Benn and Michael Foot foremost, were so vehement in their opposition to Euopeanism. In the 1980s the poles reversed, and Leftists turned to Brussels when they saw Margaret Thatcher was against it.

In fact, the Bennite opposition, like the Thatcherite, was essentially democratic and constitutional, and should have appealed equally to Left, Right and Centre. Both Tony benn and Margaret Thatcher saw the danger of surrendering the sovereign rights of elected national assemblies to a cabal of unelected and therefore unaccountable bureaucrats.

Take a look at Tony Benn’s diary entry from 18 June, 1974:

This huge Commission building in Brussels, in the shape of a cross, is absolutely un-British. I felt as if I were going as a slave to Rome; the whole relationship was wrong. Here was I, an elected man who could be removed, doing a job, and here were these people with more power than I had and no accountability to anybody. My visit confirmed in a practical way all my suspicions that this would be the decapitation of British democracy without any countervailing advantage.

A view that is in traditional terms neither right-wing (authoritarian) of left wing (flirting with anarchy), neither conservative or socialist Euroscepticism; it’s democratic Euroscepticism. Tony benn (and Michael Foot) were to the end of their lives passionately socialist and passionate about democracy and the rights, such as free speech, that underpin democracy and that the European Federatlists threaten. Supporters of the EU are less comfortable defending the principles of the Brussels system than they are in dismissing people who point out it is undemocratic and illiberal as 'right wing nut jobs'.

To be pro-European, in their minds, means being a reasonable, open-minded, anti - sexist, anti - ageist pro everything's-rights, internationalist; to be Eurosceptic means being either a neo - Nazi or a criminal. As rabid, britain hating leftie Will Self put it recently:

"I viewed an increasingly united Europe as a handy cosmopolitan stick with which to beat the backs of uptight Little Englanders."

Having defined the issue, at least to their own satisfaction, as a Kulturkampf between moderates and 'racist bigots', many Leftists stop thinking and start screeching. If free-marketeers and patriots and Thatcherites unite in opposing the project, there must be something in it.

Hence the bizarre spectacle of people who, in other contexts, are progressive, lining up behind the most backward, undemocratic, elitist racket in Europe. Or ~~the bored little rich kids~~ anarchists of the Occupy movement supporting the most corporate - friendly, banker - friendly, Soros - friendly supra national bureaucracy on the planet. Convinced that they are proving their multicultural, diversity - loving, sexually liberated credentials they cheer a project which has impoverished millions of working people to the benefit of bankers and bureaucrats.

While the EU is passing more and more human rights laws, imposing more and more civil rights obligtions on already bankrupt nations and theoretically adopting more and more workers’ rights, it is in fact robbing workers' of the most fundamental right, the right to work and earn a living. Something has gone badly wrong with left wing thinking. Less book learning and more life experience might be the first step towards puting it right.

I think that failure to appreciate the European Union for what it is, rather than what they want it to be, is the signal failing of the Left in our age. They seem to make one, big, collective, hugely damaging mistake (I say 'they' because I do think that there is a real degree of groupthink involved) every generation or so. 40 years ago it was the failure to address Trade Union militancy, before that a pretty despicable failure to condemn Stalinism. Now it's this.

I'm not remotely a fan of Mehdi Hasan - In good leftist terms, I've tended to regard him as an attack dog for the class interests he represents - but it's encouraging to see that someone in his position is finally waking up to the monstrosity that is the EU.

Although my politics have come a very long way since, I grew up as a dyed-in-the-wool socialist and a huge fan of Tony Benn. He railed against the EU (EEC) as an undemocratic usurper of hard-won liberties and democratic expression, as well as being a haven for corporate multinationals.

This was the popular view on the left, right up into the late nineteen eighties. So it amazes me that the left suddenly went gaga about the EU, when it cynically handed out a few smarties (i.e. social chapter workers rights). I am happy the Meidhi has 'got it' at last, and I hope he preaches more about this to his friends and family on the left.

The real question is when are the rest of the so called "eurosceptics" in the established parties going to actually turn against the EU? When will these "eurosceptics" stop giving aid and comfort to political parties who support the destruction of the national independence and the right to self determination of their own people?

Daniel, you state above that " the EU is making its peoples poorer, less democratic and less free". Surely these cannot be be just words to you when so many millions have given their lives to secure the prosperity, liberty and freedom of the peoples of the UK. Only a coward would use such words and not act on them and I don't believe that you are a coward Daniel. I look forward to you resigning from your seat in the European Parliament, dumping the Conservative party, joining UKIP and becoming a founding father of the newly independent UK by winning a seat in your national Parliament.

I admit it's a new term to me. From the wiki description, it seems to be one of those excellent ideas in theory, but perhaps fails to take into account the flawed human nature.

Pros: Encourages responisible/ethical sourcing and general corporate behaviour, let's use banks as an example. They might have got away with less pre 2008 if economic democracy had been prevalent. If workers etc have an interest in their companies, it must be positive.

cons: Everyone has an agenda. At what point does an entrepreneur surrender, having lost control and direction of his/her baby? Where does crowd management stop? The extremists tend to shout loudest, meaning the moderate majority are obliged to be silent.

Conclusion: Left Right politics is also flawed and out of date. However, I would probably trust it over committee management, where paralysis is likely, due to too many cooks in every kitchen. I believe in small state, low intervention in a free market (almost non existent today). Economic Democracy seems somehow socialist in origin. It's a fine line between involving people and being at the mercy of individual agendas.

How Right Wing Sweden Democrats went mainstream

The anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats have become the third largest party in a country famous for its egalitarian ideals. The Local's Maddy Savage explores the reasons for their success.

Crammed into a former boat house a hundred metres from Stockholm's Abba museum and the city's Gröna Lund theme park, more than a hundred Sweden Democrats screamed and jumped for joy on Sunday night as exit polls suggested they were on course to secure 13 percent of the vote.

Many were in their twenties, dressed in shiny new suits and ties or tight dresses as they drank wine, ate from a buffet of cold meats and waved blue and yellow flags each time their party's results popped up on the projector screen above the main stage.

This was the Sweden Democrats' main post-election gathering and unlike in Sweden's third city Malmö, where journalists have uncovered a number of scandals about party candidates in recent weeks, reporters from across Europe were invited to observe the celebrations.

Our 'press centre' was a dark room directly beneath the main action, with wire bars on the windows and no access to Wi-Fi. But upstairs, as the wine flowed, Sweden Democrat supporters were more than willing to share their views on how the party had managed to double its vote.

"We have a reputation for accepting more immigrants than anywhere else in Europe," said Joakim Isheden, who is on the board of directors for the Sweden Democrat party's youth wing.

"We just can't keep going in the same direction," he added.

Another teenager was more brash in his assessment as he queued up at the bar.

"I know everyone thinks we are racists and yes, it is true, we don't want the immigrants here, but we really are the solution to this country's problems," he said.

So how has a far-right anti-immigration party managed to capture the hearts of around one in eight Swedes in a country with a reputation for Nordic tolerance?

Sweden currently has one of the world's most generous refugee policies. Around 2,000 people seek asylum here every week and the country grants automatic residency to all refugees fleeing the Syria conflict.

The Sweden Democrats want a radical overhaul of these laws, arguing money should instead be spent on social welfare and humanitarian aid to cap the numbers arriving in the first place.

None of the other main parties in Sweden have spoken out in favour of cutting immigration, although former Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt did bring up the ongoing costs to the country.

It is a very different political climate to other European countries such as France, Italy or the UK where centre-right parties openly discuss quotas and integration strategies.

Immigration cut push from Sweden Democrats
Jimmie Åkesson's press spokesman Linus Bylund argues that the party's unique approach to immigration is the key reason for its rapid success since 2010, when it gained its first 20 seats in the Swedish parliament.

"It is obvious that we represent a political line in the sand that is different from all the other parties," he told The Local on Monday.

"We believe that mass immigration and multiculturalism get in the way of our country's development and welfare systems. We cannot afford this."

Political Scientist Li Bennich Björkman from Uppsala university says the party's charismatic leader Jimmie Åkesson, 35, has benefited from a slick and organized media campaign and "better organization" within the party in recent years.

He has been particularly successful at attracting votes from young people during a period when unemployment among those aged 15 to 24 has bounced between 20 and 25 percent - about three times higher than overall joblessness in Sweden.

But Björkman says the party has also tapped into a growing frustration bubbling across generations in rural communities in the north and south of the country.

"There is a group of people outside of Sweden's urban cities that feel marginalized," she says.

"The Sweden Democrats are not just about cutting immigration, they represent this wider resistance to the post-modern world and so they attract people that hark back to a different kind of Sweden."

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) political party secured 10.6 percent of Thuringia and 12 percent of Brandenburg’s votes during Sunday’s state elections.

“I’m happy about this enormous vote of confidence,” said Bernd Lucke, leader of the Eurosceptic AfD party adding, “We are the force that’s renewing the political landscape.”

The AfD’s election is a major challenge to Chancellor Merkel’s party, as it hopes to lead a government in one state, Thuringia, for the first time since the Berlin Wall came down 25 years ago.

Eurosceptic Italian party delivers 200,000-signature petition for exiting euro

Italian Eurosceptic ‘The Five Star Movement’ (M5S) has filed a new petition with 200,000 signatures, calling for a referendum on the country’s exit from the Eurozone and Italy’s monetary future with the European bloc.

The signatures were presented to the Senate on Tuesday, according to a post by movement leader Beppe Grillo on his blog.

The movement wants a referendum by December at the earliest, and for it to be done by January 2016. The movement’s main message is not an exit from the European Union, but from the euro as a currency.

From when the senate receives the signatures, “there are no more excuses,” Grillo wrote on his page. He explained that the citizens and political parties have two options before them: “ignore the signatures of citizens, as has happened before, or allow them to express themselves on a topic fundamental to the economic life and social development of the country, which has never seen real debate.”

He warned that there are people in parliament willing to “do battle” for M5S, and “to take care that all the stages that lead to the referendum are… observed.”

“The euro referendum is a vote on the future of Italy. Do not let it go to waste!” he added.

According to M5S MP Carlo Sibila, Italy’s debt increased dramatically after the introduction of the euro. He also noted that Italy’s unemployment rate hovers around 12.7 percent, the sixth-highest in the EU.

Former Prime Minister Says Sweden Is Falling Apart

Former Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson has said that the election success of the Sweden Democrats is a "slap" in the face for the Stockholm establishment.

In an interview with Sveriges Television the retired politician said his own Social Democratic party and the Moderates are too similar, which he argued cost them votes at the polls.

"I think the success of the Sweden Democrats depends partly on the triangulation, the tendency not to take risks with policies, not to show the differences, which the Moderates introduced and the Social Democrats have also taken after.

"One lays so close to the other so that when one is angry and resigned there is nowhere else to protest," Persson told the Agenda programme.

Persson, who was Prime Minister from 1996 to 2006, said the Sweden Democrats did well outside of the capital as they were able to tap into voters who were fed up with the established parties.

He added that in places where there is "poor mobile phone coverage" and "trains that don't run" that the nationalist party performed better.

"All of this has been expressed. Sweden is falling apart," he said.

Persson added; "Now we have a very clear warning, a real slap in the face for the Stockholm establishment in the form of these election results."

Meanwhile, the final turnout for the election has been revealed at 85.8 percent - an increase of 1.24 percent compared to 2010.

The figures are the highest for a Swedish general election since 1994. Every election since 2002 has recorded an increase in the number of people voting.

Election experts at the University of Gothenburg said the debate surrounding immigration likely helped spike numbers this time round.

"A key to this is the conflict in the refugee/immigration question. It has expanded in dimension and the Sweden Democrats have grown stronger and mobilised in every part of the country," Henrik Ekengren Oscarsson, a researcher at the university, told the TT news agency.

Ekengren that the support for Feminist Initiative (FI) in various parts of the country also played a part in the high turnout. FI earned 3.1 percent of the vote, just short of the 4 percent threshold to earn a spot in parliament.

Outgoing democracy minister Birgitta Ohlsson said she welcomed the news of the increased turnout.

All the political parties in Sweden are a photocopy of each other and so is the Swedish media, everything is more or less the same. That's the legacy of the Social Democrats and the "law of Jante", why do something different and excel when the norm is average. Why have an Economist, a Business Administrator or a Political Science professional when you can have a welder as Prime Minister... just because the small people also deserve a chance. Social Mediocrats are Sweden's cancer and shame on the other parties for not having the guts to address the one topic most Swedes and immigrants (the highly educated fraction) want to have addressed and corrected, which is the uncontrolled and uncapped immigration policy.

Immigration is important to many immigrant workers in Malmo.
It is already problematic and as the population in Malmo increases through immigration, the jobs become scarcer, more competition for existing jobs and many small businesses fail due to too much competition that later fail as new businesses are created.
And yet many immigrants cannot vote for riksdag because they are not citizens.
Many want a cap on immigration in to Malmo. but will never get it and it will spread like a virus as Goteborg will possible be next and so on.

Unfortunately only one party faced the topic of immigration head on. That's where all other parties failed, thus the result for the SD party. I largely disagree with the views of the SD party just like 87% of the people who casted a vote, that doesn't change the fact that other parties fell short and inconclusive in the topic of immigration.

But it isn't a surprise move, left-wing media constately censor, filter and alter information spread to people of Sweden. The point is still the same. You could have 100 parties, if they all act as a single entity when it comes to an important subject, as in dig their head in the sand and pretend it does not exist, then of course you will have a chunk of the population who will go and put the stamp on the one parti who does raise the issue, no matter how extreme they may be perceived. And whats worse is that those who did so are now being labelled as racists, and pushed from society, and said issue is still pushed under the rug. Lesson NOT learned, message NOT received apparently.

The reporting services in Sweden want everyone to believe that it is a "everyone against one"-situation. That is not true, every comment from anyone saying anything different is not written in the papers. Left-wing is controlling the newsflow and reporting on the peoples opinions. Have you read the political program for SD? There is the reason people votes for Sverigedemokraterna. And of course, there in NOT 87% that votes AGAINST that no matter what newspapers in Sweden wants you to believe. There is statistics saying more than 50% of the Swedish people does not want more immigration but only 13% votes for SD, the rest votes for another party. The immigration question is not an important question for a voter. Swedish media is the responsible for constantely pushing that question forward, into the extreme. The voter choses to place his/her vote for totally different reasons, not the immigration topic.

I get that cultural/racial sectarianism/preservation is not on every one's top priority but I want people to consider how immigration affects other issues. Things aren't two-dimensional and other issues are relatable.

When you allow people people with certain dangerous diseases, ranging from bacteria to viruses (not all diseases fall into this category but still...), that causes larger pressure on your socialized healthcare. And it spreads into population, infecting future generations, and creating an unhealthy population. So it isn't just money but literal health. There is also crime. Yes Swedes commit crimes, and the vast majority of criminals in Sweden are Swedes based upon it being a Swedish country with a majority population (usually populations need to be adjusted for and another factor is a certain min threshold of foreign populations). You have criminals here. Why would you add more, creating more pressures on your police/jails (but biggest reason is creating future victims)? I would figure even Feminist wouldn't want those with serial rape convictions into the country (this is why I can't take Feminist seriously). Or murder. Another is environment. When you increase your population that increases the domestic impact on environment ranging from footprint to cars, etc. Sure environmental issues of over population are increasing around the world and 3rd world countries have unsustainable birthrates. But, that is a world issue that needs to be tackled with birth control. Domestic environment is impacted by population level (not to mention if the person liters or has negative views for such). Career, market, jobs are affected. Most refugees live off the welfare and many migrants tend to fill low-skilled jobs that can be taken from those who live in the country (like the youth who also could use the skills). The country does need immigration for lack of jobs when it comes to certain job deficiencies in an area, but that should be upon a job to job basis where the government finds what jobs are needed and selectively adds those people (like in Australia or NZ). Job generation does occur but only among certain people of a higher class with enough capital. That doesn't apply for the majority of migrants. Again, this requires screening.

So already I touched upon health care, security/crime, jobs, environment, and how they relate to the issue of migrants. Everything is INTERCONNECTED. Complex thinkers can see how different issues play off of each other and are not isolated. Think about it this way, immigration occurs in your daily life. Who you let into your house (or not) is an example of immigration (temporary or permanent). People who screen for people who they will share an apartment with potential people, etc (if they're not crazy, culturally compatible, have secure job to pay a portion of the bill, etc). I urge those who are hesitant reading this to "connect the dots" in their personal lives, and see parallels of immigration to their own lives, to see how important it is. And no, I think immigration is important (selective/restricted immigration) not absolutely no immigration.

Yes, you have some points. People vote for the best of Sweden, and it might be an indirect vote on regulated immigration, but it is absolutely not the primary cause, they might see the effects regulated immigration will have on Sweden in the long run and place the vote on SD, but still ... I might be repeating myself into lunacy: Sweden politics is NOT about immigration, it is not! Swedes are far more intelligent than placing their vote based only on the immigration question, there are far more crucial things to take into consideration.
